Research Assistant / Associate

Knowledge Media Institute (KMi)
£28,695 - £37,394, Ref: 10673
Based in Milton Keynes
Temporary contract until 31st May 2016

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have recently come to the fore through high profile providers such as Udacity, Coursera, edX and the OU’s own FutureLearn. According to some commentators this new initiative will radically change the higher education landscape through the provision of high quality freely available educational materials. The FORGE project will apply technologies related to rich interactive eBooks, social networking learning platforms and Linked Data to turn large scale Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) facilities into a learning resource.

The weSPOT project aims at propagating a scientific inquiry approach for science learning and teaching in combination with current curricula and teaching practices. It lowers the threshold for linking everyday life with science teaching in schools through technology. weSPOT supports the meaningful contextualization of scientific concepts by relating them to personal curiosity, experiences, and reasoning founded on a theoretically sound and technology supported personal inquiry approach.

Temporary contract for 24 months

Declared by Harvard Business Review as the “sexiest job of the 21st century”, data science skills are becoming a key asset to maintain European competitiveness in a global market. Data scientists are, however, a rare breed, e.g. well-known McKinsey study estimated already in 2011 that the United States will soon require 60 percent more graduates able to handle large amounts of data as part of their daily jobs.

The new EU funded project the European Data Science Academy (edsa-project.eu/) will address this problem in three ways:

• Demand analysis: through interviews of focused groups and trend mining tools scrutinizing thousands of job descriptions and technology blogs, we will gain a thorough understanding of the industrial requirements at the European level.

• Data science curricula: high-quality, multilingual and multimodal training materials (eBooks, slides, video lectures, online demonstrators and showcases, data sets, online courses) that will be usable on different platforms.

• Training delivery and learning analytics: To maximize outreach we will make use of some of the most popular training delivery platforms worldwide, including VideoLectures.NET and iTunes U. A suite of machine learning tools will provide an analytics dashboard ensuring that we deliver positive targeted learning experiences.

The Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute has an opening for two Research Assistants to work on the EC-funded project Europeana Cloud (eCloud), in two emerging areas of Computer Science – Cloud Computing & Data Science.

eCloud is designed to establish a shared cloud-based storage and compute infrastructure for European aggregators.
