The Computer Science and Electronic Engineering Departments have been collaborating on Multimedia Retrieval for years, eg, in the EC funded projects CustomTV, SAMBITS and SAVANT and in the UK DTI and EPSRC sponsored project PROMETHEUS.

Mounia Lalmas

Dr. Mounia Lalmas, Reader in the Department of Computer Science, has been an active researcher in information retrieval since 1990 with expertise in knowledge representations; logical models; modelling uncertainty ; structured document retrieval (XML, MPEG-7); web retrieval; combination of evidence in IR; data fusion. She is the co-editor of the book Information Retrieval: Uncertainty and Logics, which presents theoretical foundations as well as implementations of systems for manipulating large repositories of structured multimedia information. She has published widely on these aspects, and organised a number of related events (WIRUL, LUMIS), and has served on various programme committees of information retrieval and knowledge management events (CIKM, SIGIR, FQAS, ECIR, III). Currently she is co-leading INEX, the evaluation initiative for XML retrieval, where usercentred aspects and multimedia data will be considered from next year onwards, when INEX will become part of the DELOS network of excellence in digital libraries.

Ebroul Izquierdo

Dr. Ebroul Izquierdo, Reader in Digital Media Engineering in Electronic Engineering, has been involved in research and management of several large projects currently, coordinating of the EU funded project BUSMAN and representing QMUL in the IST Network of Excellence SCHEMA, he is also a member of the steering group of the FP6 IP aceMedia. Dr. Izquierdo is an IEE Chartered Engineer, a senior member of the IEEE, the IEE, and the British Machine Vision Association. He represents the UK in the European COST211 forum. He has been chairing sections and organising invited sections at relevant events such as SCI’2000 and the Int Conf on Science and Technology for the Development. He is on the Programme Committee of the IEEE Information Visualization, the EURASIP&IEEE int. conf. on Video Processing, and multimedia communication conferences, as well as the COST211 sponsored European Workshop on Image Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services. He is the general chair of WIAMIS03 and associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on CSVT; he has published over 150 technical papers.
