Semantic Web filter - Magpie

ASPL/Magpie evaluation questionnaire

The KnowledgeWeb Project

Briefly about:
Knowledge Web is a Network of Excellence that aims to support the transition of Ontology technology from Academia to Industry. The current consortium is integrated by 18 participants including leading partners in Semantic Web, Multimedia, Human Language Technology, Workflow and Agents. The NoE will concentrate its efforts around the outreach of this technology to industry. Naturally, this includes education and research efforts to ensure the durability of impact and support of industry. The project runs from 2004 to 2007, and is supported by the European Union Information Society initiative Framework VI grant no. FP6-507482.

Challenge for KMi:
KMi's role in the project is to build a showcase illustrating the value of applying Semantic Web technologies to support learning on the web. This ongoing work builds on a number of already-existing KMi technologies, including Magpie, ScholOnto and BuddySpace, as well as on our experience in supporting the succcessful, distributed computing project climateprediction.net.

Moreover we are also in charge of the main educational activities of the Network of Excellence, and in particular Prof. Enrico Motta is the Director of the annual European Summer School on Ontological Engineering and the Semantic Web (SSSW), the premiere educational event in the area of the semantic web.

Browsing the Web Semantically

Magpie:
Magpie is an experimental Semantic Web 'filter' developed at The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute. It works as a streamlined toolbar that sits within your web browser, and helps you find and further elaborate things you are interested in.

LATEST NEWS

ASPL-v1/Magpie Prototype Evaluation:
ASPL-v1/Magpie plug-in is now available for download and testing. Currently, it is only available for the Microsoft Internet Explorer v5 or above. The KnowledgeWeb demonstrator plug-in comes with two sample ontological lexicons: climate glossary and semantic web studies (semweb-studies.onto). The latter is to be used if you decide to respond to our evaluation questionnaire.
Note that the format of lexicons has been improved, so if you had an older version of Magpie/ASPL, you need to reinstall it!

Advanced Semantic Platform for Learning (demo):
Advanced Semantic Platform for Learning (ASPL-v1) is a service-oriented framework that aims to support advanced learning tasks students are facing (e.g. writing literature reviews) by means of decomposing a learning task into a sequence of smaller sub-tasks addressing different types of learning (from simple recall, through comprehension and analysis), and map these sub-tasks onto available semantic services, which a student can interact with using our Magpie framework for developing semantic web applications. This is an early prototype of ASPL, which was presented at the KnowledgeWeb review in March 2005.
