X-MEDIA : Knowledge Sharing and Reuse across Media

  Project Description

X-Media is a 4 year long ISP project financed under the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme. The project addresses the issue of knowledge management in complex distributed environments. It will study, develop and implement large scale methodologies and techniques for knowledge management able to support sharing and reuse of knowledge that is distributed in different media (images, documents and data) and repositories (data bases, knowledge bases, document repositories, etc.) or that is inaccessible for current systems, which cannot capture the knowledge implicit across media.

The Knowledge Media institute's input to X-Media concentrates on three facets:

Development of methodology for knowledge sharing across multiple media formats. This will provide guidelines to assist organisations in developing and deploying X-Media applications.

Development of methods for knowledge fusion across multiple media formats. This will provide methods for identifying entities and similarity metrics to assist the merging of information from different sources.

Development of a semantic browsing approach. This will embody the X-Media notions of knowledge lenses, constant exploration, and perspective building.
