KMi members have done it again! For the second year running a paper authored by KMi folks has won the best paper award at the Asian Semantic Web Conference, which was held in Shanghai on 6-9 December 2009. In 2008 the winner was a paper by Silvio Peroni, Enrico Motta, and Mathieu d’Aquin - see http://news.kmi.open.ac.uk/11/1059. This year the award has gone to Vanessa Lopez, Andriy Nikolov, Miriam Fernandez, Marta Sabou, Victoria Uren and Enrico Motta for their paper entitled "Merging and Ranking Answers on the Semantic Web: The Wisdom of Crowds". The paper focuses on the PowerAqua system and presents innovative algorithms for locating, combining and ranking answers to questions expressed in natural language, which are retrieved from the large number of data, which are now available on the Semantic Web. This work has been carried in the context of the EU-funded projects OpenKnowledge and XMedia. In addition to winning the best paper award, KMi had a very strong presence at this conference with Vanessa Lopez, Miriam Fernandez, Andriy Nikolov, Stefan Dietze, and Sofia Angeletou presenting research papers. This strong KMi presence made the award party particularly enjoyable, as the KMi contingent celebrated with plenty of exotic chinese food and traditional Chinese dances.
