PHAROS gets reviewed

Stefan Rueger, Monday 3 Mar 2008

The official 1st-year review of the PHAROS project has just concluded following a review meeting in Brussels on 28 and 29 Feb 2008.

PHAROS (Platform for searcH of Audiovisual Resources across Online Spaces) is an Integrated Project co-financed by the European Union under the Information Society Technologies Programme (6th Framework Programme) Strategic ‘Objective Search Engines for Audiovisual Content’. The PHAROS mission is to advance audiovisual search from a point-solution search engine paradigm to an integrated search platform paradigm. This platform will be built on an innovative, open, and distributed architecture that enables consumers, businesses and organisations to unlock the values found in audiovisual content.

Five international reviewer and the project officer looked at the work and outcome of the first year, which is mainly the architecture of the search engine, an early internal testbed for audiovisual search and an extension to the RSS 2.0 for audiovisual contents (AVRSS). KMi contributed to the technical advances of PHAROS with novel automated visual annotators, video shot segmentation, query interaction modelling and the content-based search engine architecture.

The results were very positive, indeed: the reviewers were clearly impressed with the work done and the PHAROS project passed with flying colours.
