In the light of the societal and ethical risks emerging from the technological developments in Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things, AAAI and ACM joined their forces to launch a new conference series exploring ‘AI, Ethics, and Society’. The first edition of this conference was co-located with AAAI-18 on February 2-3, 2018 in New Orleans, USA.

The organizers received an impressive number of high-quality submissions revealing the community’s interest to discuss data ethics in an interdisciplinary context. KMier Pinelopi Troullinou and ex-KMier Mathieu d’Aquin participated to the conference presenting a methodological tool to integrate ethical and societal considerations in AI and data science research process. The paper entitled “Towards an ‘Ethics in Design’ methodology for AI research projects” was accepted for inclusion in the conference proceedings and as an oral and poster presentation. This was a great success for the authors, not only due to the low acceptance rates, but mainly because this paper was the outcome of a great collaboration between two arguably distinct academic spheres; computer and critical social science. This collaboration also shows the commitment of KMi to play a key role in the ethical debate emerging from the wide use of AI technologies.

It was a long way to New Orleans and an intense two days conference but totally worthy discussing about algorithmic bias, accountability of autonomous entities, philosophical grounding of AI decision and other pressing issues with such a great and diverse bunch of academics and industry players.
