A successful first workshop on Linked Data for Knowledge Discovery

Ilaria Tiddi, Monday 29 Sep 2014

The first workshop on Linked Data for Knowledge Discovery (LD4KD) took place in Nancy (North-East of France) on Sept. 19th, during the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML/PKDD). The event was organised by two KMi members, Dr. Mathieu d’Aquin and PhD student Ilaria Tiddi, in collaboration with a former KMi member, Prof. Nicolas Jay from the LORIA lab of Nancy.

The workshop aimed at creating collaborative channels and discussions between experts of the long-standing field of Knowledge Discovery, with experts of the newer one of Linked Data technologies. Although it took place the day after the conference, LD4KD was the second most popular workshop of the conference (in number of registrations), attracting more than 30 people in the audience throughout the day. The real success here is that LD4KD managed to bring together experts and practitioners from both domains, to attend 8 presentations and a final discussion on the research directions these domains should jointly explore, as well as to share thoughts, questions and suggestions through a collaborative document and twitter (see http://events.kmi.open.ac.uk/ld4kd2014/collaborate/).

The success of the workshop showed that a collaboration between the two fields is possible, and motivated the organisers to repeat the experience in the future.
