Live Fresher’s Week Events, October 2014

Peter Scott, Monday 6 Oct 2014

This week saw KMi support two linked live and online "Fresher’s Week" events for the new October 2014 intake of Students. OU Student Assoication (OUSA) radio kicked off with a broadcast on Monday 29th September and then the University’s Student Hub Live ran over two days Wednesday and Thursday, of that same week. OUSA Radio was a "talk-show radio" format webcast live 29th September with direct student-to-student interactions running from the student offices here in Milton Keynes, UK. The Student Hub Live video session on 1st / 2nd October 2014 was also live from the campus and was intended to appeal to new students who want to get involved with the OU Community, talk to other students, Associate Lecturers, Module chairs and leaders of the institution.

The first ever live broadcast of OU Student Radio from the OU Students Association saw experienced OU students Sue, Mark and Neil presenting a guide to the world of an OU student in this 2 hour special. There was a chance to ask the community your student problems, find out how other students go about their OU student lives and hear some topical OU interviews. The radio event even allowed callers to phone in questions and comments via the conventional telephone (which even in this online world many OU students still have!) and join in the debate.

Live from the KMi Podium, the Student Hub Live saw OU presenters Karen Foley and Dave Middleton interviewing guests, introducing role play sessions, and even conducting a live quiz with a highly interactive remote student participation.

Some comments from users during the events:

  • "Thanks team! It’s been a really lovely experience 🙂 Really buzzing to get started!"   "What a blast!!!  OU ROCKS!!!"
  • "The team should be cracking open the bubbly tonight most definitely!
  • "For the organisers, it was lovely! We want more of those, please! I enjoyed them immensely, and I am not #new2OU, been here since 2005 ;)"
  • "Thank you all for these events, been with the OU for 9 years now, but this is the first time I attended something like this. Keep up the good work!"
  • "Thanks to every one involved. Really enjoyed this 🙂 "
  • "Makes one proud to be an OU student."
  • "I have came away with so much that I didnt know despite completing 5 modules. Need more of this…"

As the students said – well done team!
