KMi with a impactful presence at Open Repositories 2025

Nancy Pontika, Wednesday 2 Jul 2025

Earlier this year, the Open Repositories 2025 (OR2025) conference in Chicago was eagerly anticipated, with CORE set to showcase its contributions to open science infrastructure. Focusing on responsible AI use, metadata innovation, and national repository coordination, CORE’s presence at the conference was both significant and impactful.

On Day 1, Petr Knoth introduced SDG Classify, an AI-powered tool developed by CORE to automatically label research outputs with relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Integrated into the CORE Dashboard and accessible via API, this tool streamlines impact tracking for institutions. Matteo Cancellieri presented a new tool for extracting data access statements from articles, enhancing transparency and reproducibility in research.

Day 2 featured a panel discussion on managing machine access to repositories in the age of generative AI. Petr proposed a FAIRbots whitelist registry to balance openness with infrastructure protection. He also presented the USRN Discovery Pilot, which demonstrated a 50% increase in discoverable outputs across 20 US institutions. This project underscored the importance of shared infrastructure and best practices in advancing open access.

On Day 3, Matteo discussed the SoFAIR project, which aims to improve the representation of software in metadata and ensure proper recognition of software assets in repositories. This initiative is part of CORE’s broader efforts to enhance the discoverability and integrity of research outputs.

OR2025 reaffirmed CORE’s commitment to developing open systems that are scalable, sustainable, and fair. The conference highlighted the importance of partnerships and collective efforts in advancing open science.
