A Novel Approach to Visualizing and Navigating Ontologies
KC-Viz is a novel tool for visualizing and navigating ontologies, which exploits an innovative ontology summarization method to support a ’middle-out ontology browsing’ approach, where it becomes possible to navigate ontologies starting from the most information-rich nodes ("key concepts"). Thus, KC-Viz allows users to quickly make sense of very large ontologies, by providing summarized views of ontologies at different levels of abstraction, depending on the current focus of the user. KC-Viz makes use of the award-winning KCE algorithm for ontology summarization - http://kmi.open.ac.uk/technologies/name/kce, which combines theories from the cognitive sciences with formal methods from linguistics and ontology engineering to identify the key concepts in an ontology. KC-Viz is fully implemented and is available as a plugin of the NeOn Toolkit (http://neon-toolkit.org/wiki/KC-Viz).
