Online Learning and Linked Data at WWW 2013

John Domingue, Tuesday 21 May 2013

KMi organised a tutorial about Online Learning and Linked Data on May 13 at the World Wide Web conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tutorial was a joint event between the EUCLID and LinkedUp projects and was delivered by John Domingue and Alexander Mikroyannidis from KMi and Stefan Dietze from L3S Research Center, Germany on behalf of Mathieu d’Aquin (KMi).

The tutorial focused on the latest developments in online learning and Linked Data, presenting new online learning methods for supporting the teaching of Linked Data, together with examples of how these methods have been used in the EUCLID project to produce and deliver online learning resources about Linked Data. Additionally, ways in which Linked Data principles and technologies can be used to support online learning and create innovative educational services were explained, based on use cases and applications considered by the LinkedUp project. The tutorial presentations are available in the EUCLID web site.

Alexander Mikroyannidis also presented a paper about the FORGE project at the 3rd International Workshop on Learning and Education with the Web of Data (LILE 2013). FORGE is a new FP7 project starting this October, which will be making use of Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) facilities for online learning. FORGE will be taking the first step towards turning FIRE into a pan-European educational platform for Future Internet through Linked Data.

The rest of the WWW conference featured high-quality keynotes and panel discussions, including the ones delivered by Luis von Ahn (inventor of reCAPTCHA) and Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web). And of course, being in Brazil, there was lots of caipirinha and dancing at the social event!
