The 5th annual Ghana Data Science Summit (IndabaX Ghana), held 17-19 July 2024, at the iconic Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, was a vibrant celebration of innovation, knowledge-sharing, and grassroots engagement. Under the theme “Unleashing the Potential of AI through Grassroots Engagement,” the event brought together data science enthusiasts, professionals, and academics from across the globe to explore the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors.
This year’s summit was packed with activities including insightful keynotes, interactive hands-on training sessions, thought-provoking panel discussions, inspiring poster presentations, and a hackathon. It served as a melting pot for ideas, collaborations, and networking, driving forward Ghana’s leadership in data science and AI on the continent.
KMi’s very own Dr. Joseph Kwarteng represented the institute at this year’s Ghana Data Science Summit as part of the Shifting Power project. He had the privilege of participating in a dynamic panel discussion titled “Navigating the Future: The Role of Large Language Models in Shaping Education.” The session was moderated by the renowned media personality Emmanuel Kwasi Debrah, with esteemed Dr. Francisca Adoma Acheampong as a co-panelist. The panel discussion centred on the profound impact of large language models (LLMs) on the educational landscape, delving into how these advanced AI tools are revolutionizing learning experiences by offering personalised educational content, enhancing students’ access to information, and equipping them for a technology-driven world.
The panel also touched upon the potential challenges posed by the growing dependence on LLMs. The conversation highlighted concerns regarding the risk of diminishing students’ creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills if these technologies are not integrated thoughtfully into educational practices. The panel underscored the importance of balancing technological advancement with the cultivation of essential human skills to ensure a holistic approach to education in the AI era.
Dr Kwarteng said; “The Ghana Data Science Summit 2024 was a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in advancing AI and data science in Africa. The event not only showcased cutting-edge research and applications but also emphasised the importance of grassroots engagement in driving sustainable and inclusive growth in the field. It was truly an inspiring experience to be part of this landmark event and to contribute to the conversations shaping the future of AI and education.”
