Reflections from Tokyo: KMi’s CORE at the COAR 2025 Annual Meeting

The COAR Annual Conference 2025 in Tokyo (12–14 May) was a key event for repository experts and open science advocates. Prof Petr Knoth represented CORE in discussions on AI, machine access, and repository infrastructure.
On Day 1, Prof Knoth joined a panel exploring AI bots’ impact on repositories, stressing the need for clear standards and sustainable management of machine access. Day 2 focused on global open science experiences, with Knoth and UKCoRR colleagues discussing the UK’s repository landscape, highlighting CORE’s role in easing compliance and improving metadata quality despite financial and staffing challenges.
Day 3 looked ahead, with Prof Knoth and Martin Klein presenting on AI’s potential to reshape repository workflows. They showcased tools like CORE-GPT, which enhances content exploration and accessibility.
The meeting highlighted AI’s transformative potential in scholarly communication. Aligning on shared models and standards could lead to a more inclusive future for open access.
