Al Selvin, Senior Manager in the Information Technology Group at Verizon Communications, today presented a visiting speaker seminar on 'Practising Knowledge Art' at KMi's Podium. Creating and producing situated knowledge artifacts - for example, creating a model of a problem unique to a single group or organization - involves a range of roles and skills. A role of special interest is that of the practitioner: the person thinking about what sorts of representational strategies would be best suited to the situation, and how those representations should be created given the tools (media) in use. The talk focused on the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of the work involved in the practitioner role, and presented an initial model of these dimensions drawn from more than ten years of experience developing and applying the Compendium methodology. This model is part of the groundwork for a forthcoming doctoral research project at the Knowledge Media Institute.
