Capturing Knowledge with Altitude

KMi continued its long association with the KAW/KCAP series of workshops and conferences last week with a big presence at KCAP′05 in Banff, Canada. KCAP is one of the most creative gatherings of knowledge management researchers on the planet. This year saw presentations on knowledge capture from stories and from games on the web, ontology mapping, population and generation, Bayesian networks and constraint programming. The invited speakers were Pat Hayes, IHMC, University of West Florida "Speaking Informally..." and Carole Goble, University of Manchester, UK "The Montagues and the Capulets: Part II" both emphasising the need to bridge the gap between formal representations of knowledge and practical applications. From KMi, Yuangui Lei presented a paper entitled "An Instance Mapping Ontology for the Semantic Web". Victoria Uren presented another entitled "Browsing for Information by Highlighting Automatically Generated Annotations" on behalf of colleagues at KMi and AIFB, Karlsruhe. There were also posters by Jianhan Zhu on the CORDER data mining algorithm developed in collaboration with Grupo STELA, Brazil, and Dileep Damle on ontology extraction from text, and a poster presentation at the SW-EL′05 Workshop on web-based learning by Michele Pasin.
