KMi Semantic GIS System wins Scripting Challenge at ESWC 2006

John Domingue, Friday 16 Jun 2006

KMi Semantic GIS system won the Scripting Challenge at the European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2006). The system was created by Vlad Tanasescu, Alessio Gugliotta and John Domingue in collaboration with partners at Essex County Council and BT Research Labs in Martlesham and supports council planners dealing with severe weather emergencies. Using KMi’s semantic web services infrastructure IRS-III, the system enables interoperability between a front end built on top of the Google Maps API, BuddySpace, KMi’s instant messaging environment, and Essex GIS data, and meteorological information. ESWC was held this year in Budva in Montenegro and attracted over 300 attendees. In addition to winning the Scripting Challenge KMi had a significant presence at the conference as the Conference Chair was John Domingue, the Workshop Chair was Liliana Cabral and the Semantic Web Technologies Co-ordinator was Tom Heath. KMi additionally supplied a conference specific instant messaging system (MSG) and a semantic search engine as part of the conference semantic technologies track. Finally, KMi also had 3 main conference papers, a tutorial on semantic web services and a number of workshop papers.
