Summer Scholarships for Young Black People – The 2023 Call is Open
Jane Whild, Monday 13 Mar 2023Since 2020, KMi have provided financial support to Black scholars to enable them to experiment in a cutting-edge field, that can help to change the world. Hot technology topics previously covered include: Misinformation, Robotics, Human Computer Interaction, Blockchain and Knowledge Graphs.
The 4th call is now open. Three successful applicants will receive financial support with a bursary of £2,700, alongside the experience to build up their careers as young members in STEM.
Applicants this year can choose to apply for one of four challenges which use hot technologies to solve societal challenges and positively impact the world around us. Projects start on 1st July and run for 9 weeks until the end of August. The activities can be conducted online or at the Open University campus:
- Challenge 1: Should I read this? How do we know when a scientific paper is really good?
- Challenge 2: Exploring the Hallucinations of ChatGPT and Friends
- Challenge 3: When AI creativity interacts with haptic touch, what will happen?
- Challenge 4: World Domination with Raspberry Pi and The Internet of Things
In addition to the bursary, each scholar will receive mentoring and support from KMi researchers, students and technicians who work in our project spaces.
The benefits
KMi Scholars will create a story for future generations. The KMi team aim to make Black students feel at home in a computer science research environment and demonstrate what computing careers can offer. A scholarship could be a step forward in career development. It can provide skills and evidence which can be included in applications to study at university or for employment.
