KMi celebrated Mental Health Awareness week!

Nancy Pontika, Tuesday 21 May 2024

Mental health and wellbeing are vital aspects of our lives that often get overlooked in the hustle and bustle of our daily routines. During Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s an opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of taking care of our mental health and to explore the various ways we can maintain and improve our wellbeing. At KMi, we asked staff how they manage their mental health, and their responses were both inspiring and insightful.

Creativity emerged as a powerful outlet for many. One staff member shared, “I like to draw,” while another mentioned, “my way to cope is art, mermaids more recently.” Engaging in creative activities allows us to express our emotions, reduce stress, and find joy in the process of making something new.

Physical activity is another common and effective way to enhance mental wellbeing. One colleague finds solace in nature: “I go for a run. The best way to free up my mind from all the noise, running.” Another enjoys the calming presence of their pet: “I go to the beach with my dog and watch her enjoy wallowing in the sand.” Whether it’s running, dancing, or spending time outdoors, movement helps to clear the mind and boost our mood.

Support networks and professional help play crucial roles in maintaining mental health. One of our team members highlighted the importance of relationships: “I support others and surround myself with people who support me.” Another has found long-term benefit in therapy: “I have been doing psychotherapy for over a decade now.” These responses remind us that we don’t have to face our struggles alone—seeking support from loved ones or professionals can make a significant difference.

Spirituality also provides comfort and strength for some. One person shared, “I have struggled with mental health issues for a few years, I find solace only through spirituality. Reciting and listening to the Quran works best for me.” Spiritual practices can offer a sense of peace and a way to connect with something greater than ourselves.

Other methods of self-care mentioned by our staff include enjoying a healthy treat after exercise: “Exercise for half an hour and then treat myself to an ice-cold banana and turmeric smoothie,” and immersing in nature while gardening: “Do some gardening when the sun is out, with headphones on, for hours.” These activities highlight the importance of rewarding ourselves and spending time in environments that rejuvenate us.

Mental Health Awareness Week serves as a crucial reminder to prioritize our mental health and wellbeing. However, it’s important to remember that taking care of ourselves is a year-round endeavor. By integrating these practices into our daily lives, we can foster a more balanced, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Let’s continue to support each other, seek help when needed, and find joy in the activities that nurture our minds and souls. Together, we can create a community where mental health is always a priority.
