Exploring AI and Data: a podcast with Prof. Domingue

Nancy Pontika, Thursday 19 Sep 2024

On September 2nd, Prof John Domingue participated in a popular podcast, as an AI Expert, hosted by the Cripps Law firm, which shed light on the evolving relationship between AI and data in the legal context.

The discussion was designed for legal professionals and law students, demystifying complex topics related to artificial intelligence. In a brief introduction John outlined the key forms of AI, drawing from cognitive psychology and machine learning, to explain how AI systems simulate human thought processes and learn from data. He then answered questions from the online audience. Questions varied from the huge potential impact of AI on law, the future of lawyers and to concerns about AI’s growing role in society, particularly regarding data privacy and the weaknesses of the technology.

The session wrapped up with an important conclusion: AI is a powerful tool for processing and translating data, but it is not yet a substitute for human knowledge.

The session was very popular with far more questions received than normal.

Cripps is a law firm specializing in both business and personal legal services.
