KMi at ISWC 2023

Nancy Pontika, Tuesday 14 Nov 2023

The 22nd International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2023), a leading global event for the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graph Community, has successfully wrapped up, marked by notable involvement from KMi researchers.

The ISWC series of conferences is coordinated by the Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA), whose Vice-President is KMi’s Harith Alani. Professor Alani is also leading a new initiative for making the conference more environmentally friendly and offsetting its carbon footprint. SWSA has already allocated a budget for carbon offsetting of ISWC 2023 and 2024, and agreed to include this budget item in all future occurrences of the conference.

In this year’s edition, KMi was well represented in the main conference committees, including the Senior Research Track PC (Francesco Osborne), the Senior Resource Track PC (Enrico Daga), and the Research Track PC (Angelo Salatino). KMi-ers were also involved in workshop organisation, with Francesco Osborne co-organising the Workshop on Deep Learning for Knowledge Graphs (DL4KG). Additionally, Dr Osborne will serve as the co-chair of the Industry Track at ISWC 2024.

In addition to playing key organisational roles, KMi-ers also presented new scientific results at the conference, in both the main programme and associated workshops. For example, John Domingue was a Keynote in the ISWC Doctoral Consortium where he gave a talk entitled "Spending as Much Time as Possible on the Beach: Reflections on an Academic Career" covering a number of tips based on his research experiences within KMi.

The following contributions were presented at the conference (in bold the KMi authors):

Meloni, A., Angioni, S., Salatino, A., Osborne, F., Birukou, A., Reforgiato Recupero, D. and Motta, E. AIDA-Bot 2.0: Enhancing Conversational Agents with Knowledge Graphs for Analysing the Research Landscape. In-Use Track.

Cadeddu, A., Chessa, A., De Leo, V., Fenu, G., Motta, E., Osborne, F., Reforgiato Recupero, D., Salatino, A., Secchi, L. Leveraging Knowledge Graphs with Large Language Models for Classification Tasks in the Tourism Domain. The Workshop on Deep Learning for Knowledge Graphs (DL4KG).

Cadeddu, A., Chessa, A., De Leo, V., Fenu, G., Motta, E., Osborne, F., Reforgiato Recupero, D., Salatino, A., Secchi, L. Enhancing Scholarly Understanding: A Comparison of Knowledge Injection Strategies in Large Language Models. The Workshop on Deep Learning for Knowledge Graphs (DL4KG).
