KMi at Green IT Networking Seminar

Stefan Rueger, Paul Alexander and Robbie Bays attended the Green IT Networking Seminar hosted by the London Technology Network (LTN), at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London.

The event showcased cutting-edge research and development in technologies which can help reduce energy costs and improve our organizations carbon footprint.

KMi were on hand to offer advice on green IT through server virtualization.

Highlights of the various speakers include:

Dr Jeff Tseng (Dept. of Physics, Oxford University), explained the practicalities of their java-based PC emulator. The emulator, an open source software, can install an operating system as a virtual machine, using only idle resources on the host desktop. The idle resources are then harvested to help with computation-heavy experiments. This reduces the need for extra servers to handle the required CPU load and thus reduces energy consumption.

Mike Walker (IBM) discussed the advantages of virtualization. In the case of IBM, virtualization has allowed them to consolidate their data centres 155 to only 7.

Gary Hird (Technical Strategy Systems Manager – John Lewis Partnership) explained for a client level the practicalities of implementing Green IT within the commercial sector. John Lewis have utilized virtualization to maximize their server effiency.
