Surface Engineering of Borophene
Tuesday 14 Jan 2025
Researchers in the School of Engineering and Innovation, in collaboration with colleagues from ten other institutions, jointly published a review article entitled Surface Engineering of Borophene as Next-Generation Materials for Energy and Environmental Applications in the journal Energy and Environmental Materials. Borophene is an emerging bi-dimensional nanomaterial formed by boron atoms arranged in anisotropic crystal structures that lead to exceptional mechanical, electronic, and conductivity properties. Surface and interface engineering, through doping, functionalization, and synthesis of hybridized and nanocomposite borophene-based systems, is crucial for tailoring borophene’s properties to specific applications. Key applications explored include energy systems (batteries, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage), catalysis for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, sensors, and optoelectronics for advanced photonic devices.
