las2peer: Innovation on the Fringe Next Generation Open Source Service Development for Communities of Practice
This event took place on Monday 10 September 2018 at 11:30

The practice of service development in general and Web service development in particular is not easy to acquire for novice and even experienced software developers. Either you have to learn a huge software stack or you have to rely on third party libraries, whose quality you cannot know and trust. Moreover, the needs of professional communities for scalability, security, privacy and other non-functional requirements are constantly increasing in open environments such as the Web. With the open-source las2peer approach we deliver a developeroriented peer-to-peer framework for Web service development based on a long track of experiences in supporting professional communities. It consists of three main pillars. The first is a model-driven Web engineering approach to create Web services in a way that supports novice developers starting application development for las2peer. The second is the las2peer service framework itself. Every member of a community can host their own las2peer node and connect herself to a network of nodes. This peerto- peer network of service-hosting nodes shares a common (encrypted) storage and allows for scalable microservice architectures, distributed across the community members’ nodes, mitigating the need for central infrastructure. The third part of our approach is the MobSOS community success evaluation framework. It provides means to develop service success measurement and collect usage data across the las2peer network, also including user feedback and survey responses at a central Web resource.

We are also inviting top experts in AI and Knowledge Technologies to discuss major socio-technological topics with an audience that comprises both members of the Knowledge Media Institute, as well as the wider staff at The Open University. Differently from our seminar series, these events follow a Q&A format.
